Mosaic tesserae

What is the use of tesserae in Roman mosaics? Tessera , (Latin: “cube,” or “die”,)plural Tesserae , in mosaic work, a small piece of stone, glass, ceramic, or other hard material cut in a cubical or some other regular shape. The earliest tesserae , which by 2bc had replaced natural pebbles in Hellenistic mosaics , were cut from marble and limestone.


Tesserae is a name for the objects that you glue onto a substrate in order to create a work of art called a mosaic. I discuss some of those objects here. The tesserae you choose for your creation are limited only by your imagination.
