Cross stitch fabric count conversion

Extra fabric on each side for finishing? Use this chart to determine the finished size of a design for various fabric counts. Find the stitch count of the fabric on the top line.


Remember that this chart only gives the finished size of the design. The stitched size is the intersection.

You could simply wing it, but you run the risk of not having enough fabric or, just the opposite, and wasting fabric. Since cross stitch on linen is done over two threads instead of over one square as with Aida, to convert fabrics from Linen to Aida, divide by two. Thus, substitute 14-count Aida for 28-count linen. I use a program by Jane Greenoff called crossstitch designer.


You can choose your fabric, number of colours and count of fabric. Want to make sure you buy the correct size fabric or need to convert a pattern from one fabric stitch count to another? Just enter the width and height of the pattern in stitches or in inches (together with the fabric count that it was designed for) and then read off the dimensions for the fabric count you want to use.

Convert Stitch Count. Determining the size of your finished project is as simple as dividing the Stitch Count of the design by the Thread Count of your fabric. If the width of the design is threads, using count Aida will result in a finished width of inches. How to do counted cross stitch?


What is cross stitch fabric called? Counted embroidery techniques such as cross stitch and blackwork are worked from a chart. Rarely are the squares on the chart the same size as the squares on your Aida or evenweave fabrics.


To see a visual representation, take out a ruler and compare a one-inch section against your fabric and count how many stitches you can make within that inch. Ah, but there’s a catch! If you are stitching over threads on linen or evenweave, you want to divide the count of your fabric in half before calculating.

Linen works the same way as Aida, but the fabric counts are higher, typically anywhere from stitches per inch to stitches per inch.


The difference is that linen is typically stitched over 2. That means, for example, 28- count linen will have stitches per inch when stitched over 2. On count fabric (holes per inch) you stitch over thread (to make stitches sized holes per inch).
