A small amount of bleeding from your incision is possible. Vigorous activity such as exercise can cause your stitches to come apart. Ask your healthcare provider. In most cases, wound care would be very straightforward and uncomplicate with possibly only requiring some antibiotic ointment application 2-days until the incision is healed. A local anesthetic is administered to minimize the pain of the procedure.


Using a scalpel, your surgeon will access the lipoma and cut it away from the surrounding tissue and fat. Smaller lipomas can be removed using a much smaller incision, minimizing your recovery time and sometimes even allowing you to forego the need for stitches. Surgical removal of lipomas may mean you need more rest before exercising that area of the body.

Low activity of the area in question is suggested for several weeks following the surgical removal of a lipoma. Doing range-of-motion exercises in this area is acceptable during this time. There is almost no downtime when removing a lipoma. Some of my patients have come on their lunch break to have one removed. Since it involves surgery, you may have some bruising, scarring, contour irregularity, bleeding, infection, or difficulties with the healing process.


You also may see a slight indentation under the skin where your lipoma was removed. Recovery from the procedure is usually quick, relatively painless, and free from complications. The lipoma will be tested after removal to rule out cancer. These non-surgical options are not always appropriate for large lipomas , as they cannot entirely remove the lipoma. The elliptical exision is the treatment of choice when removing your lipoma as the chances of recurrence are almost zero.

Lipomas are harmless. Typically, patients can return to work and resume light activity after a week.
